9 Reasons to Consider VPSA over PSA Process Technology

December 8, 2021 | By Caitlin Kamminga | In Insights

OSI’s unique Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption (VPSA) technology offers several benefits over the more commonly used PSA process. Here are 9 of the top reasons:

  • Air separation at lower operating pressure means lower energy consumption and reduces the potential for water condensation.
  • PSA systems compress everything in the air, which is about 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen and 1% Argon. VPSA systems only compress oxygen, hence reducing the amount of energy used for compression.
Composition of the air in the atmosphere. PSA compresses everything, whereas VPSA compresses the oxygen only.
  • VPSA systems are less susceptible to humid environments compared to PSA systems due to the robust design of the adsorption column.
  • VPSA uses an oil-free blower, thus avoiding any oil carryover common with oil-lubricated compressors.
  • VPSA’s lower operating pressure eliminates molecular sieve breakdown and dusting (the sieve removes the nitrogen from the air). You never need to add sieve to the adsorption column because the Vacuum Pressure Swing System runs at about 10% of the operating pressure of a PSA system, resulting in a lower operating cost.
  • Additional filtration is required for PSA system to capture the dust from sieve breakdown so that solenoid valves are not fowled and cease to operate. This requires regular maintenance on the valves.
  • VPSA adsorption columns generally last for the life of the machine > 10 years, compared to a PSA system which commonly needs repacking of adsorbent every 3-5 years - producing a lower operating cost.
  • VPSA shows no, or significantly less, degradation of performance at high altitude - unlike PSA technology.
  • Typically, air-compressors require frequent maintenance. With VPSA systems, there is no need to size or source a large air compressor and dryer system.

All the above advantages reduce the cost of preventive maintenance and repairs, as well as operating costs, hereby reducing the cost of operations and ownership.
